What Should You Ask a Welding Shop Before Hiring Them?

Ask a welding shop for a written estimate with every cost listed, what certifications apply, what warranty covers the work, and when it will be done. Typical turnaround is same day to 2 weeks, though it varies by job and season. Get the answers in writing before you approve any work.

Most shop disputes come from something nobody put in writing: a price that grew, a part that was not what you expected, a warranty that turned out shorter than you thought. Take these questions to every welding shop you talk to, compare the answers side by side, and keep the important ones on paper.

Typical turnaround: same day to 2 weeks. Ask for a realistic date on your specific job.

The Questions

  1. Can I get a written quote with material, labor, finish and delivery listed separately?
  2. What do you need from me: drawing, sketch, photos or measurements?
  3. Are your welders certified, for example to an AWS code, for this kind of work?
  4. What is your shop rate and your minimum charge?
  5. What is the lead time, and what could delay it?
  6. Do you carry liability insurance, and do you install on site?
  7. Which processes do you use (MIG, TIG, stick), and which suits this metal?
  8. Do you do mobile welding, and what is the travel charge?
  9. Is this repair safe on a structural or load-bearing part?
