How Do You Compare Repair Quotes?

Compare the total with parts, labor, fees and tax, not the hourly rate alone. Ask each shop to quote the same job, then compare the hours billed, the type of parts, the warranty in months and miles and the completion date. A slightly higher price with a better warranty can be the better deal.

More Help

How many repair quotes should you get?

Two or three are usually enough for any job over a few hundred dollars. Give each shop the same description or the same drawing. You may pay a diagnostic fee, so ask for the first shop’s findings in writing to share with the next.

Why is one quote so much cheaper?

Often because of cheaper parts, a shorter warranty, a different diagnosis or a missing item. Fill in every row for each shop before you decide.
