ASE Certification Explained

Updated November 6, 2026

What Does ASE Certified Mean?

ASE certification means a technician passed a test from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence in a specific area, such as brakes or engine repair, and has relevant work experience. Certifications expire and must be renewed. It is voluntary, and it applies to people rather than whole shops, so ask who will work on your car.

What It Covers

The tests are split by subject. Cars and light trucks have separate tests for engine repair, transmissions, brakes, suspension, electrical systems, heating and air conditioning, and more. A technician who passes the core series can earn Master status.

What It Does Not Tell You

No test can tell you if a shop communicates honestly or prices fairly. Combine it with a written estimate and a clear warranty. See how to choose a mechanic.
